![]() ![]() And that’s why Shilo was always licking his butt! She put him on a strict prescription diet and everything cleared up! Then we slowly added different things to his diet one at a time. The new vet had a feeling the allergies were food related because if a dog eats something they’re allergic to, it can irritate their butt when they poop. I decided to go to a new vet who helped us tackle the allergies and heal the sores. But I was sick of Shilo feeling terrible and doing rounds of steroids when the sores appeared. A vet we were seeing at the time would prescribe a round of prednisone to clear things up. “For years Shilo had sores on his belly and body, and he was always trying to lick or scratch his bum. Nice and solid! I never thought I’d be so excited over dog poop!” – Took Shilo Years To Figure Out His Food Sensitivity Then by accident, my husband bought the lamb grain free version of the food we get and practically the next day my dog’s poop was magically like all the other dogs out there. I’d read that chicken was a very common dog allergy as well as grain so we switch to salmon grain free. That’s when I started to be concerned about food allergies. Most of his rash went away after being treated except for his elbows which just stayed red. He had some rashes on his elbow when we got him and semisoft stool that wasn’t going away so I ended up taking him to vet and he was diagnosed with derma mites. “When we rescued Allen we started him on a chicken based dog food. But even with beef or fish, Beatrice was licking her paws, her eyes were extremely watery causing the folds on her face to become infected, got the occasional hotspot, and most recently she developed an ugly rash that seemed to come out of nowhere and disappear just the same.” – Had a Rash That Wouldn’t Disappear I was fostering a pit bull at the time that had really incredible results switching from your basic grocery store kibble to a chicken/grain free variety. “When I got Beatrice I started her off right away with no grain and chicken just because the breed is so prone to allergies. ![]() All of these pups were switched to a lamb recipe food and are doing great now! Luckily their mamas did some research and found out that a lot of it was caused by a sensitivity to chicken or grains (and in one case, fish and beef).
